If you’re a fan of Magic: The Gathering, you’ve probably taken at least a quick look at the upcoming 2027 timeline that was revealed last month. Among them are three “regular” sets that take place in the MTG multiverse: an undersea-themed set on the new plane of Nauctis, a return to Kamigawa with Pacific Rim vibes, and a treat for the old-school fans on Teferi’s home plane of Zhalfir. However, there are also three unannounced Universes Beyond sets coming next year, each following one of the revealed sets.

Just in case you’re unaware of the terminology, “Universes Beyond” refers to Magic sets that are based on fictional works from outside the established canon, with recent examples including The Hobbit, Spider-Man, and Avatar: The Last Airbender. These crossover sets used to be rare occurrences (and they didn’t exist at all until a few years ago), but they’ve become increasingly common since the Final Fantasy set in June 2025. And of course, a lot of fans have opinions about this trend. My own feelings on Universes Beyond are… mixed, let’s say, but that’s not why I’m writing this article. Instead, I thought I’d have a little fun with the mystery surrounding these upcoming sets. It seems like Wizards of the Coast is intentionally trying to make us guess what they might be, so why not play their game? I decided to make a list of several possibilities for 2027 (or just future UB sets in general, since you know they’re going to keep doing it), some of which are serious predictions, others are more like hopes, and a few that are just shots in the dark. I’ve given an estimated likeliness for each guess, based on my very smart and scientific process that definitely isn’t just throwing out random numbers. And just for fun, I’ve even created a few custom cards to go along with each prediction. If I call at least two out of three of them, I’m gonna go ahead and say I won. And if I lose, then… I don’t know, I’ll send Wizards a million-dollar check or something. Anyway, let’s get started!

Prediction #1: X-Men (99.9% Likely)

This is by far the most obvious prediction, and I’m sure others have already guessed it, so I figure I’ll just get it out of the way. They’ve already released two Marvel sets, the most recent of which was suspiciously devoid of even the most popular mutants. Sure, Storm and Wolverine were already covered in the Secret Lair Drop, but there’s no way they’d pass up a Magneto card, or Cyclops, or Emma Frost… you get the idea. Plus, Disney is clearly pushing hard for the muties right now, with season 2 of X-Men ’97 being released recently and the live-action movie everyone’s buzzing about. As far as I’m concerned, there’s basically no way an X-Men set isn’t going to appear in the 2027 lineup.

Prediction #2: Star Wars (80% Likely)

I’d say this is the next most likely prediction. Not only is this franchise owned by the same company as Marvel, but it seems that sci-fi nostalgia teasing is what Wizards really wants to do right now. First there was Edge of Eternity, essentially a pseudo-Star Wars set… with maybe a bit of Mass Effect mixed in. Then there’s the upcoming Star Trek set, not to mention all the mech stuff they’re doing with Kamigawa. I won’t say this is a sure thing like with the X-Men prediction, but I have a strong feeling that lightsabers and Ewoks are in this game’s near future.

Prediction #3: Legend of Korra (35% Likely)

Everyone loved the first Avatar set, so it’s not too unreasonable to think that they might want to do a sequel. I mean, Nickelodeon thought the same thing when they came up with the show itself, right? Of course, while it has a decent following, Legend of Korra is nowhere near as popular as its predecessor, so Wizards might understandably assume that this set wouldn’t sell as well as the first. But even if the shows aren’t generally considered equal, I personally think you could still make an equally fun Magic set with Korra’s material. It has just as much worldbuilding, at least as many characters, and plenty of stuff that could easily be turned into cards. They could have Avatar Wan as a legendary creature or turn his “story” into a saga enchantment. That metal-bending city could make for a cool land, and they could do something interesting with pro bending… you get the idea.

Prediction #4: Legend of Zelda (20% Likely)

Maybe this one’s more of a wish than a prediction, because I would honestly love this, but I do also have some evidence to support it. The most compelling argument is the success of the Final Fantasy set. It’s not too hard to figure that Wizards will want to do another set based on a popular JRPG franchise, and I can’t think of too many others with as much material to use. I mean, how many Zelda games are there now? And they have such a wide variety of styles and tones; you could have cartoony cards from Windwaker mixed with more dramatic stuff from Ocarina of Time, and of course lots of Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild. Then there’s the potential for meme cards. You know they won’t be able to resist an “it’s dangerous to go alone” reference or a mass chicken attack. If the design team gets really bold, they might even throw in a nod to the CDI games or the 80s cartoon. And finally, there’s all the hype about the upcoming live-action movie, which I’m sure the marketing team would take into account. All in all, I’d say this is a definite possibility, but far from a solid prediction.

Prediction #5: Ben 10 (10% Likely)

I don’t think this one is super likely. While Wizards has set a precedent for Saturday-morning cartoon sets, this show isn’t as highly regarded as Avatar or as nostalgic as TMNT. However, I wouldn’t say a Ben 10 set is completely out of the question. For one thing, the alien creature type has been getting more and more attention lately, and this set would certainly do a lot with that. It also has a nice variety of material to use for cards: sci-fi artifacts like the Omnitrix and the null void projector, magic-users like Gwen and Hex, powerhouse creatures like Way Big and Vilgax, silly creatures like Grey Matter and those little electric aliens, and so on. The designers would probably focus on the original series (and the current reboot, as much as I hate to admit it), but if they really wanted, they could also pull from Alien Force and Ultimate Alien. Honestly, I think a Ben 10 Universes Beyond has real potential, at least as much as the turtles anyway.

Prediction #6: DC Comics (3% Likely)

It seems like Wizards is pretty much married to Marvel at this point, so I think it’s doubtful they would hop aboard the DC train anytime soon. However, I’ve personally always been a bigger fan of the DC universe, and I would be really interested to see how Magic would adapt its characters and lore. Maybe they would start out with a Batman set as a counterpart to Spider-Man, or perhaps jump straight to the Justice League? Would they show some love to less-appreciated characters like Etrigan and B’wana Beast, or just make five different versions of Superman? Unfortunately, we probably won’t get the answers to these questions, but I really wouldn’t mind being proven wrong on this one.

Prediction #7: Adventure Time (1% Likely)

This one’s not going to happen, I know that… but man, you have no idea how much I would be into this. Adventure Time is one of my all-time favorite cartoons, and there’s so many characters, creatures, items, events, and locations that would be great as cards. They could have a Candy Kingdom faction with food token mechanics, all of Finn’s swords could be equipment cards, they could throw in a transforming Gunther/Orgalorg, or they could explore any number of other possibilities. There’s even some new content to work with: Distant Lands, Fionna and Cake, and Side Quests. Of course, the art style is a big obstacle; the simplistic Flash cartoon aesthetic doesn’t exactly scream Magic: The Gathering. On the other hand, they always take creative liberties with this kind of stuff. I mean, most of the Final Fantasy cards don’t look anything like their in-game models. Anyway, an Adventure Time set may be the biggest longshot on this list, but I still don’t think it’s impossible. At the very least, maybe we’ll get a Secret Lair Drop for it or something.
